Key Characteristics and Biology

  • Size & Appearance: Growing to 25-35 cm, this species is the largest in Australia. They have a slender head, long snout, and a body covered in small, often dark spots.
  • Habitat: Found in shallow seagrass, mangroves, and deep sponges, ranging from bays to rocky reefs, up to 12m or more.
  • Behavior: They are diurnal to nocturnal feeders, utilizing a prehensile tail to anchor themselves in strong currents.
  • Reproduction: Like other seahorses, males are responsible for incubating eggs in a specialized brood pouch, producing large broods, sometimes over 400 eggs.

Aquarium Care Requirements

  • Temperatures: As a temperate species, they require cooler water, preferably below , as higher temperatures can cause stress.
  • Diet: They require a specialized diet of frozen foods, including mysis shrimp and krill. They are, however, prone to being outcompeted for food, so they are best kept in species-only tanks.
  • Lifespan: They have a relatively long lifespan of approximately 7–10 years
